The acorns that wanted to become a forest

Postby Explorer on Mon Mar 19, 2007 12:36 pm

It is very simple really, but in its simplicity also lies the beauty.
Last fall I collected a handful of (sprouting) acorns and sprinkled them in 3 pots that I kept on my desk.
A very obvious miracle happened, a little forest appeared on my desk. Alive, green, growing, real.
Placed on the corners of my desk they form a little oak grove even. And all just from a few acorns. Isn't life amazing?

Wauw, they really are amazing.

But uhm... you do know how big they can get right, I don't think they will continue to fit on your balcony, even if it is quite large! :witchlol:

Oh cool!

This reminds me that I must repot my little oak tree. I found it accidentaly on the lawn of my old house and I was worried the kids would trample it underfoot, so I dug it up and potted it. It has come with me to my new house but the garden is way too small to plant it out unfortunately.

Hmm.. perhaps you can ask some farmer if you can plant it in one of his meadows?

They don't seem to grow that fast anymore now. Perhaps because they are in these small pots. Which is pretty convenient.
There is a little story behind these trees. The acorns come from my grove in the woods, right from a secluded hollow that I used a lot for bardic rituals. From a tree that I regard as a sort of guardian of my grove. So these little trees kind of bring part of my forest grove into my home and they are the offspring of a tree that I know well. I have 'harvested' a few fresh green oak leaves from them to 'channel' strength in a healing pouch filled with grounded mistletoe for a sick friend last week.

The kids left home. I brought them back to the woods where I collected the acorns. I planted them on the quarters of my circle in the woods (on the corners of the circle in 'Lizzy-speak' hahaha). I did that 6 weeks ago before my holidays, and they seem to survive so far. That's going to be a nice grove in a few decades.

Mmm, I've got one pot left on the balcony and they look great.
The ones I brought to the woods faired a bit less. Half of them were uprooted, probably by boar or deer. And the other half are.. mmm... eaten, also by deer I think. These home grown oaks seem to be somewhat of sissies. They clearly don't know how to defend themselves in the real world, tsssk. I should probably send the remaining oaks on my balcony through some empowering therapy. Does anybody know a good tree therapist around here?

We don´t have oaks in Brazil.
I know I should enjoy my native trees as much as the oaks, and I really do my best.
Actually the oak tree is a myth to the Brazilians, they simply don´t grow in here no matter how hard we try.
The biologists have been trying for years, but they die.
So the best I could do when I went to Europe was take lots of pictures and steal some acorns and leaves (and bring hidden, -it´s forbidden to carry seeds and leaves).
How are your oaks doing?
